The Goth

This photograph shows the Goth public house in Armadale run under the Gothenburg system, where the business is owned by the local community and all profits are used for the benefit of the local community.

The tower, which leans and is now a feature of the Armadale landscape, was added in 1924 in honour of the first president, Malcolm Mallace, who died in 1922. The original plate with Armadale Public House Society Ltd. is now missing from the tower.

The Goth, owned and operated by Armadale Public House Society Ltd., was opened in 1901 and celebrated its centenary in 2001. The profits from the business were put back into the community by way of donations to local groups and charities.
