The Independent Order of Rechabites
May Watson, born in 1928, has been a member of the Independent Order of Rechabites since birth. In this excerpt she discusses the religious procedures followed at the two yearly conference when representatives of the different areas get together for a meeting.
On the Sunday before the two yearly conference there is a church service held in the town where the meeting is taking place. One of the Rechabite officials such as a High Chief Ruler might read the lesson. The service is non-denominational but they have often been held in Methodist churches in the past.
The Independent Order of Rechabites began in Salford, England, in 1835. It was a temperance based friendly society and it was established in Scotland in Dumfries by 1838. It was very successful and spread rapidly. The organisation provided good sick and funeral benefits and whole families could become involved in the movement.
