advertising a Rechabite Conference

Poster

This is a poster described as the Rechabite Conference Supplement. In the centre there is a photograph of the conference reception committee of Edinburgh of 1897. Photographs of other important individuals surround the reception committee.

The Independent Order of Rechabites began in Salford, England, in 1835. It was a temperance based friendly society and it was established in Scotland in Dumfries by 1838. It was very successful and spread rapidly. The organisation provided good sick and funeral benefits and whole families could become involved in the movement.

Colourful regalia, such as the sashes worn by the reception committee in the photograph, were an important part of Rechabitism. Aprons and ribbons were also worn, and banners were carried in procession.
